You can add images to your document, incorporating photos, screenshots, or other visual assets into your design content. Motiff supports images in PNG, JPEG, HEIC, and WebP formats.
Images in Motiff are not a separate layer type but a fill type. You can add images to any shape or vector network.
Note: The maximum image size is 4096 × 4096 pixels. If an image exceeds this size limit, it will be downsized proportionally to 4096 pixels. In some cases, Motiff may need to decode and convert the image before adding it to the file, so we cannot guarantee that all files’ metadata will be preserved.
You can set an image as the fill for an existing shape through the fill section in the right sidebar. This method only supports uploading images locally.
Note: Images must be uploaded in PNG or JPG format.
You can follow the steps below to add images as a fill.
Tip: Motiff will automatically apply a black-and-white checkerboard placeholder to the shape.
Tip: If you want to replace an image after setting it as a fill, you can drag the image over the image preview area in the fill modal or drag it over the Fill color well in the right sidebar.
You can add images by clicking on Place image in the shape tool menu in the toolbar. This method allows you to precisely choose the placement of each image. Since Motiff considers images as fills, you can add them to existing layers.
Tip: You can use the following shortcuts to place images.
In Motiff, you can use the following four ways to place images on the canvas.
You can use shortcuts Command + V / Ctrl + V to paste images.
If you want to paste an image to create a new layer, you need to deselect layers on the canvas before pasting the image. This makes it easy to copy images from the web without downloading them. Motiff will generate a rectangle with dimensions identical to the original image and apply the image as its fill.
If you want to paste an image to an existing layer, you can select the existing layer before pasting the image. Motiff will add an image as a new fill to the selected layer.
Tip: To replace an existing fill, you can select the desired fill modal in the right sidebar, including fill, fit, crop, and tile.
Note: Motiff supports four different image fill modes, which will lead to different display effects depending on the size of the image and the layer: Fill, Fit, Crop, and Tile.
When Motiff applies an image as a fill, it does not allow direct scaling or resizing of the image itself.
However, you can scale the layer containing the image, just like any other layer. The image's scaling and positioning will depend on the selected image fill mode.
For instance, in the example below, the image fill mode is set to Fill. As the layer is resized, Motiff adjusts the image to ensure it completely covers the layer.
Select the layer you want to adjust. Click on the fill swatch in the design panel to open the fill menu.
Click next to the image fill mode and choose Crop.
Eight blue handles will appear around the image. You can crop the image by:
Click anywhere on the canvas to apply the crop.
Tips:
You can rotate the image within the layer, which will not affect the orientation of the layer itself, only the image within it.
Click to rotate the image 90º clockwise:
Motiff offers non-destructive adjustment features. You can undo or change these settings at any time. As shown in the video below, Motiff supports the adjustments of Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, Temperature, Tint, Highlights, and Shadows.
